Before Day 2 of Week 5 in the 2019 VNL set off, four teams had a chance to fill the last vacant spot for the Finals: Poland, Japan, Belgium, and the Dominican Republic, but with the last two mentioned sides having least chance of earning a promotion to the tournament in Nanjing, China.
In a direct duel, Poland squandered the lead in sets 2-0 before eventually beating the Dominican Republic in Pool 20 in Boryeong, South Korea: 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 17-15).
Malwina Smarzek staged another brutal performance for Poland: 35 points, including 4 kill blocks. Magdalena Stysiak contributed to the win of her team with 6 kill blocks. Bethania de la Cruz tallied 19 points for the Caribbean side, while Cándida Arias made 4 kill blocks.
So, after the match, Poland settled at the position No.6 in the charts (9-5; 26 points) and waited for the outcome of two more matches that would affect their status regarding the participation at Final 6. The Dominican ladies missed the last train to Nanjing today (7-7; 19 points).
Japan surprisingly lost to Pool 20 hosts South Korea and succumbed in straight sets, which is even more surprising: 3-0 (25-18, 25-28, 25-23).
A defeat to the last placed side in the tournament cost Japan advancing to Final Six as they dropped to the seventh place in the standings with a 7-7 record and 21 points, which is 2 wins and 5 points less than No.6 Poland.
Kim Yeon-Koung shone for Korea with 23 points. Yuki Ishii scored 17 for Korea.
After they outplayed Turkey in Pool 17 in front of their fans in Ankara, yesterday, Belgium remained in the race for the Final Six ticket but fell off today.
Brazil did the favor to Poland and swept the “Yellow Tigers” by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-18).
Ana Paula Borgo highlighted Brazil with 14 points, Natália Pereira Zilio made 4 kill blocks. Celine van Gestel and Kaja Grobelna notched 11 points apiece for Belgium (7-7; 20 points).
With the worst win-loss ratio and least points collected (2-12; 7 points) out of four challengers in the VNL (Bulgaria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, and Poland), Bulgaria will give way the spot in the 2020 VNL to the 2019 FIVB Challenger Cup winners.
On Day 2, Bulgaria succumbed to Pool 18 hosts China by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) in Ningbo.
To conclude, apart from the hosts China, the national teams of Brazil, Italy, the USA, Turkey, and Poland, in the order of placement on the charts, will compete in the Final Six.
