At the premiere of the FIVB Women’s Volleyball International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Brazil easily downed Cameroon on home soil in Uberlândia, in Pool D, and scored the first 3 points in the competition: 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-16).
With 15 points, Gabriela Guimarães “Gabi“ of Brazil was the best scorer of the match in which, interestingly, Cameroon made more kill blocks (7-5) but committed much more unforced errors (20-9). Estelle Adiana scored 12 points for the African side, while an experienced Stéphanie Fotso Mogoung set up 4 kill blocks. Natália Pereira, who is recovering from a calf injury, was spared and did not enter the court.
In the other match of the same pool, the Dominican Republic beat Azerbaijan in straight sets as well with 13 points from Bethania de La Cruz and 4 kill blocks from Jineiry Martínez. Polina Rahimova and Yelyzaveta Samadova scored 10 points apiece for Azerbaijan. The match marked a return of a libero Brenda Castillo to the Dominican Republic national team after a long break. According to the media in her country, her defensive show completely disarmed the attack of Azerbaijan.
