Poland beat Serbia by a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22) in the first match of the traditional Wagner Memorial, a tournament that is held in the memory of the Polish Volleyball coach, Hubert Jerzy Wagner. It will also serve as an ultimate test for these 4 national teams competing in it for the FIVB International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Wilfredo León top-scored for Poland with 20 points, including an ace that brought the win to his side. Uroš Kovačević and Aleksandar Atanasijević tallied 20 apiece for Serbia.
In the other match of an opening day, Brazil defeated Finland in straight sets and will meet the hosts in the next game. Flávio Gualberto and Douglas Souza notched 9 points each for the “Seleção“. Samuli Kaislasalo was Finland’s top scorer with 5 points (!).
