Italy reclaimed the world title after 23 years, outlasting Türkiye in a nail-biting 3-2 final at the 2025 FIVB World Championship in Bangkok. The Italians sealed the tie-break 15-8, completing a flawless run of seven straight wins in Thailand.
Guided by head coach Julio Velasco, the Azzurre have now achieved a historic golden streak, adding the world crown to their Paris 2024 Olympic gold and back-to-back VNL titles.
Star Performances
Italy’s attack was led by Paola Egonu, who delivered 22 points, while captain Myriam Sylla added 19, and Ekaterina Antropova came off the bench to fire 14 at crucial moments.
For Türkiye, Melissa Vargas shone brightest, topping all scorers with a remarkable 33 points, supported by captain Eda Erdem’s 19.
The Decider
Although Türkiye dominated in kills (68-59) and aces (7-5), Italy’s stronger blocking game (14 to 10) proved decisive in the final set.
A Golden Generation
With this victory, Italy have become the first team since Cuba in 2002 to hold both Olympic and World Championship titles simultaneously.
“This team will be remembered as legendary,” Velasco said after the win. Egonu added: “I’m so proud of what we achieved. This moment will stay with me forever.”
