Serbia’s men’s national volleyball team pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines, defeating Brazil in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) to secure a place in the Round of 16.

The victory at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City comes after a rocky start for the Serbians, who opened the tournament with a shock loss to Czechia before bouncing back against China. Against Brazil, however, the team displayed its finest performance in years.
Luburić and Perić Lead the Charge
Opposite Dražen Luburić was unstoppable, finishing as the match’s top scorer with 19 points (17 kills, two aces). Outside hitter Pavle Perić added 15 points, while Miran Kujundžić chipped in with 10. Setter Nikola Jovović orchestrated Serbia’s offense brilliantly, keeping Brazil’s block off balance throughout the match.
Brazil’s attack struggled against Serbia’s high energy and tight defense. Their top scorer was Alan de Souza with 10 points, but the South Americans never found their rhythm.
Coach Crețu: “One of Our Best Games in Years”
Head coach Gheorghe Crețu praised his players’ composure and resilience:
“We had a tough summer with many injuries, but these young guys showed their heart. Luburić kept the team calm, Perić brought firepower, and our block and defense were excellent. This was one of our best games in years.”
What’s Next
The result guarantees Serbia a spot in the knockout stage, where they will face one of the top teams from Pool A. For Brazil, the loss complicates their path — their advancement now depends on the outcome of Czechia vs. China later today.
