The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has announced that the FIVB Volleyball World Championship will be renamed the FIVB Volleyball World Cup beginning in 2027. The decision was approved by the FIVB Board of Administration as part of efforts to reflect the sport’s growing global profile.
The first edition under the new name will see the men’s tournament held in Poland, while the women’s competition will take place across the United States and Canada.
FIVB officials say the “World Cup” title aligns volleyball with other major international sporting events and is expected to strengthen global recognition of the tournament among fans and athletes.
The competition has already undergone major changes in recent years. Since the 2025 edition, the event features 32 national teams in both men’s and women’s tournaments and is now played every two years instead of four.
The format includes a pool stage followed by knockout rounds, culminating in the semifinals and final. The tournament will also serve as an Olympic qualifier, with the top three teams in each gender that are not yet qualified earning spots at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
