The U.S. Women’s National Team finished Week 1 of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix – Group 1 with a perfect record as they beat China in three sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 in Pool B1.

If the first two victories of Karch Kiraly’s rejuvenated squad didn’t prove everyone that USA is a strong team even without stars like Jordan Larson, Kelsey Robinson, Kim Hill and other experienced players who will join the roster in next weeks of the tournament, a third one certainly did.

The United States downed reigning Olympic Games title holders China, who competed without the 2016 Rio MVP Zhu Ting today as she tries to gather her strength back after a grueling season (she performed as backup throughout entire Week 1), at their soil in Kunshan, in straight sets.

Kelly Murphy, a highlight of the U.S. NT in Week 1, noted 19 points (3 kill blocks), while Li Jing and Liu Xiaotong scored 12 each for the Asian side, who goes to the Week 2 with 2-1 record.
