VNL W: Boskovic led Serbia against Russia, USA with new win while Japan surprised Italy and Zhu debuted

In the first match of the Week 3 of the FIVB 2018 Volleyball Nations League for women, USA continued winning streak and scored new three points.

Today in Bangkok, USA defeated Germany in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-17) although the opponents fought like real lions. Larson and Co. scored their fifth consecutive victory and they are still on the top of the standings. On the other side, Germany are still on the 15th place out of 16 with only one win.

Michelle Bartsch led the American offense with 16 points while the opposite Kelly Murphy scored 12 points. Captain Jordan Larson-Burbach hammered eight kills, one block and one ace for 10 points. Libero Kelsey Robinson handled 27 of the team’s 43 receptions with a 59 positive reception percent.

Germany’s Louisa Lippmann was her team’s leading scorer with nine points.

Japan – Italy 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11)

Japan surprised Italy in the new round of the Volleyball Nations League. They scored their third win in the competition although the Italian girls led 2-1 in sets. Ai Kurogo was the best scorer of the Japanese team with 16 points while Yuki Ishii finished the match with 12 points. In the Italian team, Paola Egonu scored 25 points including 5 blocks and was the top scorer of the match.

Japan’s head coach Kumi Nakada said: “We had some frustrating games last week at home and we made lots of corrections today. We managed to step up and improve. Our team showed lots of courage today. This made me really happy.

Thailand – Dominican Republic 0-3 (21-25, 22-25, 20-25)

Dominica girls scored their second victory in VNL and today against the host team of the Pool 11 in ThailandNiverka Marte Frica led the Caribbean side while Ajcharaporn Kongyot was the best on the home side.

I’m very happy with the victory. It’s a very good start for us. We know it’s not easy to play against Thailand; they are a very good team so I’m just really happy for this victory and the performance of my team today” said Dominican captain Marte.

China – Argentina 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-12)

Zhu Ting and China played one easy match against Argentina who are on the bottom of the standings in the competition. Expectedly, the match was finished in three sets and Zhu debuted for China. She scored 16 points while Xiaotong Liu 9. Anahi Florenca Tosi once again was the leader of Argentina with 10 points.

During the first set, we were not cooperating well. But improvements can be seen in the second and third sets and we performed well just as in our training. There are still plenty of things to learn from this match. Argentina are a strong team and they played well too” said Zhu.

Belgium – Turkey 0-3 (19-25, 18-25, 24-26)

The team of coach Giovanni Guidetti scored the sixth victory in VNL but the third consecutive. Today in Kraljevo, Turkey outplayed Belgium who suffered the fourth defeat in a row. Meryem Boz scored 26 points for the winning team followed by captain Eda Erdem Dundar 10 points.

For the Belgian team, Marlies Janssens scored 11 points while Kaja Grobelna 10 points. 

Brazil

Korea – Brazil 1-3 (11-25, 14-25, 33-35, 20-25)

Brazil celebrated new victory in VNL. Today, the team of coach Ze Roberto defeated South Korea thanks to Tandara Alves Caixeta who scored 33 points. On the other side, Jeong-Ah Park scored 19 points to lead Korea but that wasn’t enough. However, the team felt the absence of Kim Yeon-Koung who this weekend got free from NT.

Netherlands – Poland 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 27-25)

Netherlands celebrated their sixth victory in VNL and now just as Turkey, Brazil, Serbia and USA have 6-1. But they remain in the fifth position due to the set difference. Today they were better than Poland who showed better play in the third set and almost sent the match to a fourth set but Lonneke Slöetjes didn’t allow opponents to win. She was the best scorer of the match and winning team with 16 points while the top scorer of the VNL Malwina Smarzek scored only 15 points for Poland.

Serbia – Russia 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18)

Serbia closed Day 1 of Week 3 with a victory over Russia. A few years ago these two teams played uncertain matches but today the European champions dominated and deservedly won the match in three sets. Serbia scored 12 blocks while Russian girls 7. Tijana Bošković again was the main scorer with 25 points while middle blockers Milena Rašić and Jovana Stevanović put 4 blocks each. Irina Voronkova was the best scorer of Russian with 17 points.
