The fourth seed SVG Lüneburg made a victorious start in the 1. Bundesliga Männer 2018/19 playoffs by beating No.5 United Volleys Frankfurt at home by a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21). They will have the chance to make one more step forward in the German top flight on April 3 when they will play the same opponents, this time as visitors.
The Canadian international Ryan Sclater was unstoppable for Lüneburg in a nearly two-hour battle against United Volleys to score 31 points while Noah Baxpöhler contributed to the victory with four of the team’s 14 kill blocks. Moritz Karlitzek scored 13 for the losing side who had to play a playoff quarterfinal Game 1 on the road for the first time in the club history as they were always seeded fourth or above.
The top seed VfB Friedrichshafen, No.2 Hypo Tirol Alpenvolleys Haching and No.3 Berlin Recycling Volleys achieved straight-set wins in Game 1.
