The Panthers ran over defending champions Toray Arrows (7-5, 20 points, fourth-placed) by a 25-20, 25-14, 25-13 in Round 12 of the V-League with 15 points from Kunihiro Shimizu and took a sovereign lead in the standings with 11-1 and 34 points.
The nearest followers of the Panthers in the standings, JT Thunders and Toyoda Gosei Trefuerza were also successful in this round, both getting an 8-4 record but with the Thunders having one point more – 23 to 22.
The Thunders downed JTEKT Stings in four sets, despite 38 points from Bulgarian Matey Kaziyski. The Australian Thomas Edgar poured in 27 points for the winning side.
Trefuerza players had to sweat a lot to prevail against the last-placed, and also winless, F.C. Tokyo – 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23). But it was inevitable since Croatian opposite Igor Omrčen was sidelined once again. Takuya Takamatsu stood out with 20 points.
Suntory Sunbirds, for whom Cuban Yadrian Escobar made 18 points, ended a two-game losing streak by putting down Sakai Blazers in four sets.
