JPN M: Thunders lose Game 1 of playoff finals despite making 22 blocks, Panthers close to defending title

Panasonic Panthers made a huge step towards defending the Japanese Men’s Volleyball Championship.

The top seed and also the reigning champions Panasonic Panthers started the 2018-19 V.League Division 1 final victoriously. They defeated No.2 seed JT Thunders in five sets after two hours and 18 minutes. Partially, it was 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 33-31, 16-14. The fourth set lasted nearly 40 minutes!

The game was held in a neutral ground, at the packed Takeda Teva Ocean Arena in Nagoya (2,035 spectators). Issei Otake top-scored for the Panthers with 21 points while Kenji Shirasawa made four kill blocks. Australian Thomas Edgar poured in 34 points for the Thunders, Takuya Yasunaga set up six out of the team’s 22 kill blocks!

Game 2 of the best-of-two semifinals will be held on April 14 at the Musashino-no-mori Sports Plaza in Chōfu, also a neutral ground.
