The Iranian Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) filed a complaint to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) against the Pole Michał Kubiak for abusive comments on Iranian people which he made in an interview for the YouTube channel of Prawda Siatki.
“They always insult us on the court and don’t respect us. They play innocent. The Iranians think they are great and the best and we are the worst. But, I believe that they are malicious and damned people. For me, this nation doesn’t exist, even though they proudly call themselves Persians, not Arabs. Sometimes we have to play against them, but for me, they don’t exist,” Kubiak allegedly stated in an interview. This part was removed later but there was enough time for these words to travel all the way to Iran whose volleyball federation reacted immediately.
“FIVB Ethics Committee should demand Kubiak explanation for his remarks. He has offended the Iranian people and must accept responsibility for what he has said,” the acting president of the IRIVF, Afshin Davari, said to Tehran Times.
The confrontation between Kubiak and Iranian players has a long history that included provocations and trash talks on many occasions over the past several years. Probably the most unpleasant situations occurred in the 2016 Rio Olympics and in the 2018 FIVB World Championship. Kubiak also had an argument with Iranian players, that almost turned into a physical confrontation, at the end of the final of the recently held Asian Club Volleyball Championship between his team, the Panasonic Panthers, and Shahrdari Varamin.
Polish media stress that the FIVB Ethics Committee, to which the IRIVF filed its complaint against Kubiak, has no power to impose penalties on anyone. It can only assess individual cases of breaking the FIVB’s code of ethics and propose possible penalties to the FIVB Board or the global congress of this organization.
