Third-seed Stanford Cardinal (30-4) ran over fourth-seed Wisconsin Badgers (27-7) in the 2019 NCAA Division I Championship final in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to win their second straight national title, third in four seasons and ninth overall in program history.
The Cardinal resolved the match against the Badgers into their favor in straight sets, partially 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20, claiming the back-to-back title for the second time since the 1996/97 season. Senior outside hitter Kathryn Plummer led Stanford with 26 points, while junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty scored 12 points for Wisconsin.
The top scorer in the final Plummer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the competition for the second straight season. She was elected on the all-tournament team along with her teammates Jenna Gray and Morgan Hentz. Baylor’s Yossiana Pressley, Minnesota’s Alexis Hart, and Wisconsin’s Molly Haggerty and Dana Rettke were also named in the best line-up of the tournament. Pressley was recognized AVCA Division I National Player of the Year, becoming the first player in the history of Baylor female volleyball to get this honor. Kevin Hambly, the head coach of Stanford, has become the 7th head coach ever in the NCAA Women’s volleyball to lead a school to back-to-back titles.
