The Suntory Sunbirds progressed to the quarterfinal of the playoffs of the 2019/20 V.League Division 1 Men by beating the Sakai Blazers with 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 26-24). The Russian international Dimitriy Muserskiy was the most deserving player for the advancement of Suntory to the next stage as he poured in 26 points. Puerto Rican Maurice Torres scored 22 points for the losing side.
The format of the Japanese Championship is such that fourth-placed and fifth-placed sides in the regular season, in this case – Suntory and the Blazers, are to face each other in the 1/8 final. The leaders of the regular season, the Panasonic Panthers (70 points, 24-3), secured an automatic berth in the final. The second-placed JTEKT Stings (65 points, 23-4) wait for the rivals in the semifinal, while third-placed JT Thunders (62 points, 21-6) are in the quarterfinal and will play the winners of the 1/8 final – which are the Suntory Sunbirds.
