On the previous day of the opening of the tournament, a press conference with the four head coaches of the preliminary round Pool C took place in Dresden. All four head coaches agreed that the audience can expect consistently exciting games and could not be persuaded to official predictions regarding the results of the group. The clear aim of all teams is of course to enter the play-offs.

The Russian team, after the hardcopy form the official world champion and the group favorite, is in change now, according to their coach Yuriy Marichev. Marichev sees the European Championship as an important milestone during the new formation of the team, also looking forward to the World Championship and the Olympic Games. “We want to tie in with the tradition of great successes of Russian teams,” said Marichev.

For Azerbaijan’s national coach Faig Garayev is the top player Natalya Mammadova the key to success as expected. “Even if volleyball is a team game, we can’t estimate her highly enough. She is our leader and role model. Especially the younger players can be geared to her.”

The coach of Belarus Viktar Hancharou admitted openly that he would like to have a Mammadova as well in his team. For lack of such a superstar, he counts on the team spirit of his young squad and a possible following wind that can quicken his team after the dramatic last-minute qualification for the European Championship against Slovakia.

In contrast, the coach of Croatia Igor Litvinov counts on the routine of his team: “We can’t allow ourselves a weak day. Three games on a high and constant level are important to succeed in the preliminary round. Many of my players have the experience needed for that.”.
