He suffered from a cardiac arrest caused by a pulmonary edema.
A member of the FIVB Medical Commission for more than 10 years and president of the NORCECA Medical Commission, Dr Piña also attended many volleyball and beach volleyball events as a control committee member, most recently last year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Japan.
“Dr Piña del Rosario will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him and worked with him,” FIVB President Jizhong Wei said on Monday. “He will be remembered by the volleyball family for all his hard work as a member of the FIVB Medical Commission, president of the NORCECA Medical Commission and a medical delegate at competitions.”
Dr Piña graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo before completing his studies in France. In 2008 he presided over the Dominican Republic Armed Forces and National Police Sport Circle.
A colonel for the Dominican Republic Air Force, Dr Piña was also member of the medical staff for the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee.
“We are in shock after learning the terrible news,” FIVB 1st executive vice-president and NORCECA president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz said.
“Dr Piña was part of the volleyball family and a loved member of the NORCECA fraternity. He will be sorely missed.”
The FIVB and the whole of the volleyball family sends its thoughts and prayers to Dr Andres Piña Del Rosario’s family and friends on this very sad day for the sport.
