After a vote of member states of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Tokyo, Queensland’s capital Brisbane was formally awarded hosting rights for the 2032 Games, bringing the Olympics back to Australia after 32 years.

Given that Brisbane was the only bid city left in the running and had the IOC’s full support, today’s decision was a foregone conclusion. The cost of hosting the 2032 Olympics, which will be Australia’s third after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000, is anticipated to be $5 billion. Ticket sales, domestic sponsorship, and broadcast rights are likely to cover the majority of the costs. Hopefully, Covid-19 will be history and venues will be packed with supporters. According to the bid, the Games will generate $17 billion in economic benefits.
