A surprising defeat in the previous round of Pool A against the Netherlands gave the Russians no choice but to outplay tough Chinese team in order to qualify into top 4.
It didn’t start well for Russia as it lost the first set, but managed to recover, with the crucial win of the third set and Daria Isaeva’s successful spikes in the fourth.
Isaeva was the most efficient player in the winning team and on the match with 22 points, followed by Anastasia Bavykina and Daria Pisarenko with 15 each.
China had Liu Yanhan with 16 and Song Meili with 14 points on their accounts.
Russia goes on Japan in the semis.
Japanese team secured pole position in Pool B before the game against Italy, but nevertheless, it overpowered the opponent in straight sets leaving them without a single win on the tournament.
Mai Yamaguchi and Yuki Ishii collected 11 points each in Japan. Indre Sorokaite, as the only player with double digits in Italy, led the losing team.
