This way the three countries booked their tickets to next year’s finals in Argentina, where they will join Chile, Venezuela and the home squad from June 21 through 26 in the sand battles for a single continental quota for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
Colombia was the team that dominated the tournament in Cochabamba. Their pairs Jorge Mario Cabrera Garavito & Juan David Paternina and Johan Murray & Jorge Luis Manjarres won all of their games, with the exception of the opening match on Friday when the Bolivian duo Alan Israel Martínez & Sergio Franco pleased the home fans with a straight-set win against Murray & Manjarres.
All of the other country-vs-country matchups were well-disputed and none of them ended with four victories against none to one side. Uruguay was able to secure the second place by defeating Peru, French Guyana and Bolivia, each by 3 victories to 1.
The last competition day was particularly dramatic for the home team. First, the Bolivians lost to Peru with a golden set that ended at 15-13 in favor of William Maldonado & Alvaro Hidalgo against Martínez & Franco.
Still, until the very last moment the local squad kept its chances of advancing to the next round. In the penultimate game of the tournament, Bolivia’s Ismael Montenegro Rolando & Andres Serrudo claimed a 2-1 victory against Uruguay’s Ruiz Carlos Martin Molina & Marco Cairus Lucarelli to keep their country in contention, but in the end Martínez & Franco were shut out in the crucial fixture with Uruguay’s top pair Mauricio Sebastian Vieyto Acosta & Hans Hannibal to leave French Guyana in the third place.
This was a sensational achievement for French Guyana’s duos Jean-Christi Coelho & Brice Hardy Dessources and Joan Pons & Gilles Koffi, since the Continental Cup is the first international beach volleyball competition for their country.
