Katowice-vs-Resovia

Bitter memories of Asseco Resovia Rzeszów’s fans about the last season in which their team failed to qualify for the playoffs are still fresh but seven-time champions already faced a setback in the opening round of the 2019/20 PlusLiga regular season. Despite making numerous changes in the roster, Resovia lost to the home side of GKS Katowice by a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10). Resovia head coach Gruszka was unable to set a trap on the club whom he left in the offseason. Rafał Szymura led Katowice with 18 points and was named MVP of the match. Canadian Nicholas Hoag top-scored for Resovia with 20 points.

In a duel of the two teams with many trophies won in the recent history that disappointed their fiery supporters last season, PGE Skra Bełchatów (eliminated in the play-off quarter-finals) downed hosts Trefl Gdańsk (did not qualify for the playoffs) in four sets. The match at magnificent Ergo Arena was held in front of the well-packed stands (5,500 spectators). Trefl was guided by Skra’s legend Michał Winiarski who made his debut as the head coach. The match began with a moment of silence for late Miguel Ángel Falasca, who played in Skra for four seasons (2008 – 2012). In addition, the visiting team prepared a special jersey with the number 10, which will be retired in the Bełchatów team this season in the honor of the Spaniard. It is worth mentioning that Trefl’s line-up had a player who has been playing PlusLiga continuously since its creation in 2000 – Wojciech Grzyb. Serbian Dušan Petković highlighted for Skra with 20 points. Bartosz Filipiak scored 22 for Trefl.
