The second-placed ONICO Warszawa (17-5; 49 points) surpassed Plus Liga defending champions and also the leaders Zaksa Kędzierzyn-Koźle (20-2; 59 points) in five sets. Zaksa were close to making a full come back as they trailed 0-2 before tying at 2-2. The game ended partially 25-21, 27-25, 20-25, 21-25, 15-11.
This was definitely a praiseworthy result of Warszawa, the biggest revelation in the Polish championship this season, knowing the fact they played without two starters, Jan Nowakowski and Bartosz Kwolek, and one backup, the Canadian Sharon Vernon-Evans! They have all been sidelined for a while already.
The Macedonian Nikola Gjorgiev was the leading figure for the home side, giving Warszawa fans, who filled up seats in Torwar gymnasium (4,230 spectators), a reason to be happy. He scored 24 points, while Andrzej Wrona added 4 kill blocks and Damian Wojtaszek 82% reception (17 digs, 1 error, 35% perfect). In Zaksa, still deprived of help from the Belgian outside hitter Sam Deroo, the Puerto Rican Maurice Torres notched 20 points (4 kill blocks). Mateusz Bieniek made 83% attack (10/12, 2 errors).
With this win, 13th in a row, Warszawa joined PGE Skra Bełchatov in pursuit of Zaksa for the top-seed in the regular season.
