In the big match that closed Round 13 of the 2019/20 Superliga Parimatch, Fakel defeated Zenit-Kazan by a 3-1 (29-27, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21) to tie with the leaders Lokomotiv in the charts at 30 points. For the most-titled Russian team in the post-Soviet era, this was the 3rd defeat of the season in the league, which is the same number of defeats they suffered in the regular season for the previous 3 years combined!

Even a comeback that Zenit-Kazan made in the 2nd set when they trailed by a 4-12 didn’t give their players enough confidence to win the match in Novy Urengoy. Dmitriy Volkov top-scored for Fakel with 23 points, while Hungarian Krisztián Pádár served 5 aces. The Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth tallied 26 points for Zenit-Kazan who came in 6th with 21 points.

The loss against Fakel came only 4 days after the 2nd failure in the 2020 CEV Champions League in 3 matches due to which Zenit-Kazan put the appearance in the quarterfinals in jeopardy. Is this a reason enough for alarm in the team from the Tatarstan region?
