Once again this year, Russia has lost the battle for medals. After the World League, the Russians will also on the World championship fight for the fifth place.

Russian coach Andrey Voronkov: “It’s hard to make any comments now. Any deep analysis at this moment will not make any sense. We will surely spend some time on analysis later. We played below our expectations in reception and block – two elements that were our strong points before. My players fought hard in this match.”

We lost a few players during the preparation period and then during the tournament itself. It is crucial for any team to have substitutions. This was our main problem in the game with Brazil in Katowice when we felt the loss of our opposite spikers. Injuries happen in all disciplines of sport, we have to consider this in the future, to prevent such situation from happening again. We were expected to fight for the medals but now we are going to play for fifth place.”

I think we lost the two first sets in our heads. Dmitriy Muserskiy and the rest of the team felt overwhelmed by the fact that we needed to win 3-0 or 3-1. When we knew we would not qualify we relaxed and we finally started playing better. It is something that we have to work on, improve our mentality, our play on the court and the service line in such situations.”

Russian captain Sergey Makarov: “It is very hard for us to talk now, we want to congratulate the Polish national team. Now we have to keep fighting and finish the tournament in fifth position. I think we lacked good reception in the crucial moments even for the relatively easy serves.
