Michal Winiarski dreams of something bigger, after Poland qualified to the semifinals by beating Russia in a five-setter in Pool H of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship at the Atlas Arena on Thursday.

Poland’s coach Stephane Antiga: “I want to underline the fact that we needed to win at least two sets with Russia, who is never an easy team beat. I believed in my team because they played at a very good level. I did not think that Russia is stronger than the opponents we have played with so far. I’m really pleased with the good performance of all the players who had the chance to play today. Our way to the final should be a little easier now because as the winner of Pool H we will face the second team from Pool G, Germany, but all the teams at this stage are playing really well. “

Our secret to win the tiebreakers is that we do not give up until the end. I really hope this was our last fifth set though, it’s really exhausting for the team.”

Poland captain Michal Winiarski: “We were very excited all day long, now we feel great happiness. We felt a big pressure because there were high expectations not only from the fans, but also from ourselves. Our dream came true, we are going to Katowice. Now we’re dreaming of playing in the finals

Germany would not play in the third round and beat Iran unless they were a very strong team. I know that we are in a really good shape, but this is a semifinal, so it’s going to be a very nervous game. The Germans have a small advantage because they played the entire Championship in Spodek in Katowice.”
