Volleyball’s Harsh Reality: Financial Woes Overshadow Recent Global Highs

Just days after volleyball fans were treated to a spectacle of brilliance at the CEV Champions League Final Four in Łódź—and shortly after the pulse-raising finale of the AVC Champions League—the global volleyball scene has come crashing back down to earth.

In the Netherlands, one of the country’s flagship clubs has hit financial rock bottom. While the name might not shock insiders, the timing does. The team was still knee-deep in its domestic title race when news broke of its bankruptcy. Coach Mark Lebedew, who had been leading a promising new project, is already looking ahead to his next chapter in Poland, where he’ll take the reins at Nysa.

But this isn’t just about one club folding. It’s a symptom of something deeper—and more widespread.

Last year in Poland, powerhouse Chemik Police, reigning women’s champions, had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the Champions League. Why? Budget cuts. Despite outperforming expectations on the court, the club simply couldn’t afford to play in elite competition. And in Germany, clubs like Potsdam are juggling shrinking resources with growing demands—an act many are struggling to maintain. The story repeats across both men’s and women’s leagues.

Meanwhile in Asia, the picture is painted with a slightly glossier brush, but the cracks are there too. Some countries sidestep the issue through short-term contracts and a lack of a formal international transfer window. It keeps things looking neat on paper, but doesn’t solve the underlying instability.

The divide between volleyball’s elite squads and the rest is growing—not just in terms of performance, but funding. Extending the club season could help: more months mean more visibility, more sponsorship opportunities, and maybe, just maybe, a shot at long-term stability. Still, unless governing bodies step up and put real support systems in place, clubs around the world will continue walking a tightrope between glory and collapse.
