In November, some media published there are five major candidates to take over ’Zbornaya’, three foreign and three domestic. A month afterwards, it seemed that Russian federation excluded foreigners from consideration. Now – Russian online media claim there are three candidates – one domestic and two international.
“Sergey Shlyapnikov and two foreign coach – these are three candidates for the position of a head coach of the men’s national team on which will be discussed at the expert council of the Russian federation. Names of foreign experts will not be revealed until the end of expert council, to avoid too much excitement,” General Secretary of Russian federation, Aleksandr Yaremenko, stated for „R-Sport“.
Gian Luca Pasini from gazzetta.it shared information that one of these foreign experts is Montenegrin Igor Kolaković, former head coach of Serbian Men’s NT with whom he took gold medal in the 2011 CEV European Championship.
Some Russian sources even reported that Shlyapnikov, a 55-year-old supervisor of all Russian men’s volleyball youth categories, has the biggest chance to be appointed. The coach himself confirmed the rumor.
