Each season, Zenit give a chance to some of the foremost players from their youth team.

After adding the setter Loran Alekno, the son of the club coach Vladimir Alekno, to the senior team for the 2017/18, Zenit decided to do the same with the 20-year-old middle blocker Aleksey Kononov.

Kononov stood out in the recently held FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship in the Czech Republic, where his national team Russia claimed the bronze medal, while he was nominated for the ideal lineup of the tournament.
