Zenit Kazan struggled at home against Ural Ufa, who came to the match without four starters and head coach Daniele Bagnoli, in Round 22. Superliga four-time defending champions prevailed by a 3-1 (25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 25-17).
Only Aleksandr Abrosimov and Aleksey Kabeshov started the match in Kazan out of usual Ural’s lineup. Obviously, their coaching staff assessed they have more important matches to play in the continuation of the season in order to secure a playoff spot, for instance, the game against Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, a week from now.
Zenit Kazan coach Vladimir Alekno left Wilfredo León, Aleksandr Butko, and Maksim Mikhailov on the bench at the start of the match but was forced to send them in from the third set.
The U.S. international Matthew Anderson topped Zenit Kazan with 22 points (4 aces, 2 kill blocks) while Andrey Kolesnik and Canadian Ryley Barnes scored 15 points each for Ural.
Thanks to 22 points from the Serbian Dražen Luburić, Zenit Sankt Peterburg beat Enisey Krasnoyarsk on the road by a 3-1 to climb to No.4.
