Serbia’s volleyball, known worldwide as a superpower in both men’s and women’s competition, faced a turbulent year filled with more losses than wins. With generational change shaping both squads, results have brought more sorrow than joy. Still, the federation insists that this is part of a necessary process.
In conversation with Sportski Žurnal, Ivan Knežević (Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia) discussed the state of Serbian volleyball, the impressions from the past season, and the outlook for the future.
Asked about how he sees the current situation, he underlined that the turbulence was expected due to rejuvenation of the squads. According to him, the main goal this year was not only about results but also about giving young players the chance to step forward.
When reflecting on the balance of success and setbacks, he admitted that the year was more difficult than rewarding, yet stressed that such challenges are part of every rebuilding cycle.
On the destiny of the head coaches, Knežević made it clear that there is no doubt inside the federation. Gheorghe Crețu, leading the men’s team, and Zoran Terzić, in charge of the women’s side, continue to have the federation’s full support and trust. Their work is seen as the beginning of long-term projects that must be given time to bear fruit.
Looking to the future, the federation remains confident that consistency, patience, and a clear vision will guide Serbian volleyball back to moments of triumph.
