The rejuvenated U.S. squad that took part in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix and that was now reinforced by the four Olympians from Rio 2016, who made their comeback to the national team (Akinradewo, Adams, Hill, Larson), swept the fierce rivals Brazil by a 3-0 in the first international match in Anaheim since 2009 when its Federation moved the training headquarters there (25-21, 25-14, 29-27).
A rookie in the U.S. NT, the opposite Andrea Drews (a new member of the Italian top division side SAB Grima Legnano), and her teammate Jordan Larson topped the game with 18 points each. A good news for the Brazilian fans is that the receiver Gabriela Guimarães ’Gabi’ made a successful return to the national team after ending a long recovery from the injury.
Another interesting fact about the game was that Megan Courtney, who competed with the USA as the receiver in this year’s Grand Prix, now played as libero, making 45% positive reception vs. Brazil.
The second game in the USAV Cup, that was initiated in 2013, between the hosts and Brazil is scheduled for August 29 and will be played in Anaheim as well.
