The players coached by Laurent Tillie have maintained their VNL momentum by prevailing over Poland with a 3-1 in Pool 5 in Ningbo, China, making this scoreline for the fourth straight time in the tournament. It is noteworthy that Poland’s composition did not look like it will at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in August in which these two sides will meet again. Vital Heynen introduced a starting lineup composed of mostly national team rookies with the exception of Dawid Konarski. There were no players like Kurek, Kubiak or León, who will join the team in a two-month time.
Jean Patry scored 22 points for France to remain their top scorer in the 2019 VNL (64 points). Piotr Łukasik notched 17 for Poland (2-2 record), including 4 kill blocks, which is exactly how much kill blocks Marcin Komenda set up.
Bulgaria national team delegation traveled for nearly 55 hours from Argentina (Week 1, Mendoza) to China for the second week and it very much reflected on their performance against Pool 5 hosts. China scored their first win in the tournament (1-3 record) while Bulgaria lost their third match in a row (1-3 as well).
The Asian side out-blocked rivals (18-7) with Zhang Zhejia and Liu Libin dominating in this element with 5 kill blocks apiece. By highlighting China with 16 points, Chuan Jiang increased his scoring balance as his team’s top scorer at 56 points. Svetoslav Gotsev noted 9 points for Bulgaria, with 5 coming from the block.
