CHALLENGER CUP W: Tournament top-scorer Gray pilots Canada to spot in 2020 VNL

Canada earned a spot in the 2020 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League by winning the 2019 FIVB Challenger Cup in Lima, Peru.

Canada beat the Czech Republic in the 2019 FIVB Challenger Cup final to win the tournament and a spot in the next year’s edition of the FIVB Nations League, replacing the lowest ranked challenger team in the 2019 VNL, which is Bulgaria. The Eastern European side came back from 0-2 to 2-2 but was unable to fully turn the match around. Partially, it was 25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, and 15-8, in favor of Canada.

The North American team suffered misfortune during the match as its starting outside hitter Autumn Bailey injured her knee in the second set. Alexa Gray notched 27 points for Canada in the final, finishing the tournament as the top scorer with 77 points. Jennifer Cross made 6, while Emily Maglio made 5 kill blocks. Michaela Mlejnková scored 17 points for the Czech Republic. Eva Svobodová served 5, while Pavla Šmídová served 4 aces.

In the match for the third place, Argentina beat Croatia by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14).
