Social Timeline: Record-breaking match action

by WoV

All 28 teams in the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 battled in week three, with fans around the world cheering them on - and not all in their usual places.

The Czech Republic kicked off week three of their World League bid on home ground in Ceske Budejovice with a 3-2 (31-33, 25-19, 26-24, 26-28, 20-18) win against South Korea. It was a close match which was enjoyed by more than three thousand fans in the Budvar Arena.

But maybe the most anticipated match of the day was World No. 2 Russia against World No. 4, USA. FIVB World League defending champion Russia played it cool before its big match, hitting the California beach for practice.

All that sun and surf, however, may have gone to Russia’s head. USA held off Russia’s comeback and extended their 2014 World League winning streak to three with a 3-2 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.

Iran was looking for a comeback Friday, after losing all three of their World League matches so far. But despite Iran’s best wishes…

Brazil defeated Iran in a five-set thriller 3-2 in Pool A at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium.

Almost 11,000 fans flocked to the outdoor stadium to witness Italy assert its supremacy in Pool A to take its sixth straight victory by defeating Poland 3-1.
