Defending Champs Italy Too Strong for Algeria

Italy, the reigning world champions, began their title defense with a commanding 3-0 win over Algeria (25-13, 25-22, 25-17). The match had its moments of tension — especially in the second set when Algeria surged ahead — but the Azzurri’s experience and firepower carried them through.

Star outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto led the way with 15 points, showing his trademark mix of powerful kills and serving pressure. Mattia Bottolo added 13 points, while opposite Yuri Romanò chipped in 11, giving Italy a well-rounded attack.

Algeria, back at the World Championship for the first time since 1998, refused to roll over. Sidi Dour scored 11 points, while Soufiane Hosni and Boudjemaa Ikken each put up 10, proving the North Africans could still trouble the champions in stretches.

Coach Ferdinando De Giorgi admitted his team needed to shake off some rust:

“The first match is always about breaking the ice. Algeria fought hard, but we stayed calm, put pressure with our serves, and that made things easier for our block and defense.”

Belgium Outclass Ukraine in Straight Sets

Earlier in the day, Belgium’s Red Dragons produced one of the standout performances of the tournament so far, sweeping Ukraine 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22).

The star of the night was 22-year-old opposite Ferre Reggers, who exploded for 23 points at a 56% success rate. His dominance at the net was backed by outside hitter Seppe Rotty, who fired five aces among his 13 points, while captain Sam Deroo added 12 to seal the deal.

Ukraine struggled to find answers, with Vasyl Tupchii their lone bright spot, scoring 14 points.

What’s Next in Pool F

With both Italy and Belgium earning three points, the two sides now share the top of the group. Their clash on Tuesday promises to be a highlight, as the champions test themselves against one of Europe rising squads.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Algeria will battle in a must-win match to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
