Igor Gorgonzola Novara remained perfect in the 2022–23 Italian Women’s Volleyball Championship.
At the end of the fifth day of 2022–23 Serie A1, Igor Gorgonzola Novara kept pace with the current biggest title rivals and other invincible teams apart from themselves, Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano and Vero Volley Milano. Last year’s regular-season runners-up returned to the top of the table thanks to a 3-1 victory against Volley Bergamo 1991. Novara overcame the strong resistance of Bergamo in four sets, recovering from losing the opening set. The performance of Ebrar Karakurt highlighted the winning side. The Turkish opposite was the match’s top scorer with 23 points. Brazilian Lorrayna Marys scored 19 for Bergamo.
Now, Novara, even though having the same stats as Imoco (5-0, 14 points, and 15-3 set ratio) stand on top of the charts. Milano are third with 5-0 and 13 points. The last two mentioned sides earned three-point worth of triumphs yesterday.
There was some doubt as to how the most pleasant surprise of the season, Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri, would react to the first defeat of the season (0-3 against Imoco last weekend). Doubts were quickly dispelled: the ladies of coach Giulio Bregoli kept the home court an impregnable fortress, sweeping Il Bisonte Firenze in three sets with 15 points from Belgian Kaja Grobelna. Her compatriot Britt Herbots tallied 12 on the losing side.
