Only a few hours prior to the semifinals of the Carioca Championship (Rio de Janeiro state championship), Botafogo announced withdrawal from all competitions in the upcoming season, including Superliga. The club, who was established in 2015 and earned the right to play Superliga by winning Division 2 (Superliga B) last season, stressed that it tried to secure financial conditions for competing in the national championship until the last moment but was unable to do so. The management of Botafogo will mobilize to solve the existing problems so that in the near future they could have a chance to play Superliga.
The setter Pedro Teles and outside hitters Hugo and Leozinho left the team in the midst of uncertainty and signed with other clubs. But, other players such as famous middle blocker Riad, decided to stay, hoping for a last-minute solution.
As Lance! learned, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) is willing to allow Superliga, which begins on November 9, to be played with 11 teams but left open the possibility of filling in the vacancy with a team that is interested and has financial conditions to take part in the tournament. For now, Caramuru is the main candidate to become the 12th team in the 2019/20 Superliga after being relegated at the end of last season.
