Germany continued to impress at the 2019 EuroVolley. They celebrated their third victory in as many games but this one was a major highlight – Germany beat one of the major favorites for the gold medal and undefeated side until today, Russia.
The “Butterflies“ prevailed against the record world championship winners in a five-set thriller in Pool D (Bratislava, Slovakia) by a 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 15-11) and are unstoppable heading towards the Top 16.
Germany had as much as five players in double digits, led by Louisa Lippmann (17 points). The libero Anna Pogany made an impressive 79% positive reception, while teenage middle blocker Camilla Weitzel made 4 kill blocks. Nataliya Goncharova and Kseniia Parubets scored 19 points apiece for „Zbornaya“ for which Irina Koroleva (69% excellent attack) set up 7 out of the team’s 18 kill blocks.
The co-hosts Slovakia made their dream come true already after three games in the tournament.
After beating Belarus in front of the highest number of spectators ever at the Ondrej Nepela Arena in Bratislava of 4,851 (the previous record was set two days ago), Slovakia advanced to the eighth-final of the 2019 EuroVolley. For this, the home side had to come back from two sets down: 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 16-14).
Jaroslava Pencová top-scored for Slovakia with 17 points, including 5 kill blocks. Karin Palgutová had exactly the same blocking display. Anastasiya Harelik made 22 points for Belarus, who lost all chances for advancing to the Top 16 (0-3). Nadzeya Stoliar served 5 aces, while Hanna Kalinouskaya set up 6 kill blocks.
