EUROVOLLEY 2019 W: Egonu pushes Italy over Belgium with 28 in only 3 sets, Poland beat Ukraine

Italy continued their flawless 2019 CEV Women’s Volleyball European Championship campaign and assured their place in the eighth-finals.

Italy recorded their third win at the 2019 EuroVolley as they defeated Belgium by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23) on Day 4 in Pool B (Łódź, Poland). Thus, the “Azzurrine“ collected the maximum of 9 points, not losing a single set so far.

Paola Egonu was unstoppable in the first set, notching 12 points through 82% attack effectiveness. She finished the match as the top scorer of the match with 28 points, including 4 aces and 6 kill blocks. Britt Herbots scored 10 points for the “Yellow Tigers“, while Marlies Janssens set up 5 kill blocks.

The co-hosts Poland scared the crowd at the Atlas Arena as they lost the opening set to Ukraine, which was the first set which they lost in the entire tournament so far, but took the next three to stay unbeaten (3-0). This way, Poland made sure not to miss the Top 16.

Malwina Smarzek-Godek led the way for Poland towards the win with 26 points. Agnieszka Kąkolewska made her contribution with 6 kill blocks. In Ukraine (0-3), Olesia Rykhliuk scored 17 points.
