Pool C hosts Italy wrecked Serbia in the key match of the FIVB International Qualifier to advance to the Men’s Volleyball Tournament of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which they did not miss since 1976: 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-19).

Italy took revenge on Serbia for having the major role in the elimination from the last year’s FIVB World Championship (Serbia won by a 3-0 in the Top 6). How the Eastern European side was helpless in front of the packed stands at the PalaFlorio in Bari (nearly 5,500 spectators) shows the fact that it did not make a single block in the first set, while its main weapon Aleksandar Atanasijević finished the match with only 2 points! He was replaced in the second set but was returned in the third.

Ivan Zaytsev top-scored for the “Azzurri” with 13 points. He was the most deserving for all aces of his team (3). Marko Ivović scored 7 points for Serbia.

Italy joined Argentina, Poland, USA, Russia and Brazil who have qualified earlier today. Japan secured an automatic berth as Olympic hosts.
