The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games gold medalist and seven-time medalist with the US NT overall announced that knee injury, which he suffered during the 2012 London Olympic Games, was stronger than his desire to continue volleyball career.

“We reached a level with my knee that we couldn’t get past. If I can’t be ready to play right now then I’ve got to shut it down. We did everything we could and that’s that,” Stanley said to the USA Volleyball Federation website.

One year ago, he was considering returning to training.

Besides eight medals won with the US National Team (four gold medals), Stanley grabbed several major individual awards such as MVP and Best Server of the Beijing Olympics and USA Volleyball Men’s Indoor Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

Stanley said he and his family will return to native Hawaii where he will work at his family’s flooring business.
