Four teams have found their way into Sunday’s final on the first day of Queen & King of the Court Tenerife at the beautiful Beachboard Hacienda. The Spanish home favorites Adrian Gavira and Alejandro Huerta entertained the crowd by winning the final match of the evening and securing a spot in the all-important title match. They’re joined by Italy’s Manuel Alfieri and Alex Ranghieri. In the women’s tournament it’s Dutchies Desy Poiesz and Mila Konink who made it through, which also goes for Karla Borger and Hanna-Marie Schieder.
The season opener in Tenerife has not disappointed on the first day. Teams are still preparing for the new tour and one might think that levels wouldn’t be that high. But nothing could be further from the truth. The teams have brought out their A game to the world’s leading beach volleyball facility: Beachboard Hacienda.
Men
In the last match of the day Adrian Gavira and Alejandro Huerta, both former Kings of the Court, were in great shape. They won their first round, laid low in the second and were at the top of their game in the last, where they scored 12 points against the likes of Leon Luini/Yannick Verberne from the Netherlands and Joao Pedrosa and Hugo Campos from Portugal.
The first men’s team to reach the final was the new combination of Manuel Alfieri (who comes from Tenerife) and Alex Ranghieri playing for Italy. They misread the starting time for the match, so they arrived just 25 minutes before the start of the match. A short warm-up was enough for them, they won the second and third round, beating Seain Cook and Andy Benesh from the USA and Julian Hörl and Moritz Pristauz from Austria.
Women
The first women’s team to make it to Sunday’s final was a surprise, not many people would have guessed that Desy Poiesz and Mila Konink would have been the ones stamping their tickets. They showed great form and were surgical from the service line beating renowned names like Marie-Sára Štochlová and Andrea Lorenzová from Czechia and Aleksandra Wachowicz and Julia Kielak from Poland.
They are joined by Germany’s Karla Borger and Hanna-Marie Schieder who won all three rounds of their match, beating Latvia’s Anastasija Samoilova/Tina Graudina and Emi van Driel and Wies Bekhuis from the Netherlands.
