Russia Women’s National Volleyball Team finished 8th at the 2018 Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Japan. The main reason for the worst performance of the Russian women’s volleyball team at the World Championship in history, lies in the injury of their best player Nataliya Goncharova.

Until her injury, that occurred in the last match of the first round against the USA, Russian team played excellent volleyball. Even in that match, Goncharova played the whole time. At the end, USA team won this game with 3 – 2, (19-25, 25-20, 26-24, 12-25, 15-11). Goncharova scored 36 points and and this was the last performance for her at the World Championship in Japan.

Recall, that Russian team arrived in Japan without Tatiana Kosheleva, another leading player, who is injured as well.

Goncharova talked with us about her injury and situation on that moment:
“The injury occurred at the start of the second set in the game against the United States when I fell directly on my hand. As I was hot and under the adrenaline of such a match, I did not feel so much pain, but in the morning I could not raise my hand! Immediately we made an MRI that showed SLAP syndrome, (labrum rupture and partial biceps rupture). I contacted my doctor in Moscow who advised me to return to Moscow as soon as possible and that we start with rehabilitation process.“

Asked about the current situation with her injury Goncharova said:
“Now I’m in my club Dinamo Moscow. Thanks God, I am now in safe hands. With me works club specialist dr. Sergey Yurich Raskazov and physical trainer and at the same time expert for rehabilitation Damir Kolec. In next two to three weeks I will know if I need surgery operation or not. I hope that the rehabilitation which I am doing now will help me to return to the field without surgery.”

At the end of the interview, Goncharova briefly comment on the performance of the Russian team at the World Championship in Japan:
“At the end, we did not manage to reach the third round, the final six teams in the tournament and of course, I am very sorry for that. Our defensive play was very good so we were really good in that part of the game. Our problem at the World Championship was that we were not constant during the matches. It was obvious that we started well, we played very well at the beginning of the game but in the second and final part, we fell and did not manage to maintain a high level of performance.”
