Serbian giant Srećko Lisinac is one of the volleyball players that found himself in one of the world's hotspots of the coronavirus pandemic – in Italy. This is his story...

In an interview for WorldofVolley, a three-time Best Middle Blocker of the CEV European Championship distanced himself from any kind of discussion in regard to the continuation of the Italian Championship. Given that the Serbia Men’s National Team middle blocker, Lisinac, was in the European hotspot of coronavirus pandemic from the very beginning, this point of view is logical and understandable.

Check out what else the member of Italy’s Itas Trentino has to say…

How do you see this whole coronavirus situation?

“I think that it should be taken seriously and that the advice of those in charge should be obeyed so that we can get out of this difficult situation as soon as possible and resume our normal life responsibilities.“

At what point did you realize how serious this was?

“When they started closing cities and certain teams didn’t want to play away matches. Also, the number of infected people started to increase so we could immediately see that a long break and a big fight await us.“

Do you think that the Italian championship should continue when the situation with coronavirus calms down or the season should end?

“There are people who are responsible to deal with this, who will evaluate the possible risk of playing matches if they decide to resume the league. At the moment, the most important is the health of people, even at the cost of not playing some competitions.“

How do you spend your time in quarantine, how and where do you train?

“I’m still in Trento and I spend time training with my team through video calls, I’m reading, watching series, playing games, and my time passes quickly. I hope everything will work out as soon as possible.“

How difficult is it for an athlete to abruptly interrupt a competitive rhythm and then regain it after a break that already isn’t that short?

“It’s certainly difficult because, after such a long break and time spent in the house, the body should be prepared gradually, since it’s would be very easy to get injured if one starts abruptly. I think the key is to gradually step up workouts, first in the gym and then on the court with a ball and jump training.“

It’s been a few months since European qualifications for Tokyo have been completed. How do you see from this distance Serbia’s performance in the tournament and did you come to any new conclusion about what went wrong? Why European champions Serbia won’t be present at the Olympics?

“Our form wasn’t the same as in the European Championship, but I also think it’s very difficult to play qualifications against the best European teams in the middle of the club season, where the preparation period is very short. Players who have some injuries from earlier can’t give their maximum in training and enter the most important tournament like that. And then, that decides the ticket to the Olympics.“
