Terzic for WoV – “I see Serbia in the final of World Championship”

by WoV

In 2017 the Serbian Women’s volleyball team won the CEV European Championship in Azerbaijan and the bronze medal in the FIVB World Grand Prix, and in that way confirmed the third place in the FIVB world rankings. For 2018 they announced new successes.

The biggest challenge in 2018 will be the World Championship, which will be held in Japan from September 29 to October 20.

We asked the head coach of the Serbian ladies, Zoran Terzic, who already e “reserved” one medal in this competition, what did he wish in the midnight of December 31?

Like everyone, on the first place good health, and in the sporting world a medal at the World Cup, possibly more brilliant than the bronze, because I already have it in my collection” (smile)

Serbia is in Pool D. Are you satisfied with the draw?

We are satisfied with the draw. In the group, we have a couple of good teams, Brazil and the Dominican Republic who are certainly the strongest opponents. In the second round, our Pool D will face with the teams from the Pool A, and there we have three favorites; hosts Japan, the Netherlands, and Germany. It is necessary to reach the final stage, among the top six, and it does not matter in what way“ explained Terzic.

Before four years in Italy, Serbia stopped in front of the last obstacle?

Yes, we have experience from Italy when we missed our chance to get to the “Final Six”. I hope that we have learned from our mistakes and that in Japan we will have the opportunity to fight for one of the medals”.

In one interview you mentioned a gold medal?

I have a bronze medal from 2006 so, let it be the finale. I don’t want to be too ambitious!

When we speak about Serbian women’s national team, we can say that everything started from Japan, 12 years ago. That 2006. Serbia and Montenegro won the bronze medal and since then the successes of the team began.

Once upon a time, Japan was a long and completely new destination for us. And today, we cannot imagine the season without going there. We look forward to the games in Japan, it is always interesting, especially if we play against the host. I hope that we will have support during the World Cup, like always” added the first coach of Serbia

In front of Zoran Terzic is his 17th season on the bench of the women’s senior national team of Serbia. The interesting is that Terzic is the only coach in the World who won medals from all the competitions he participated in; silver Olympic Games in Rio 2016, bronze World Championship in Japan 2006, two gold medals from European Championship 2011 and 2017, silver from World Cup 2015, two bronze medals from World Grand Prix but also the medals from European Games, European League, Universiade… Where do you get the strength and motivation to new challenges?

Volleyball is my life and I feel the best when I’m doing it. Work in the national team of Serbia is huge happiness and satisfaction. The best feeling is to win a medal and bring it to your country. It has no price! You already listed all the medals we won, and I usually knew that I regret why this medal is not silver – it is bronze, or it is only silver and it could have been gold. I will be there as long as I feel happy because of what I do, and until I have the desire to be even better at each subsequent competition. Serbia today has a great generation, which can win many more medalsTerzic concluded.

You are currently coach of Dinamo Moscow, what is the club’s perspective; will there be any medals and trophies?

That’s a bit more difficult question. As things stand, we will remain second placed at the end of the league, and then through the play-off, we will try to defend the title. We are missing another quality stranger, preferably receiver. Nevertheless, we will work hard and try with this team to become champions of Russia. In the Champions League, we got two very tough opponents. You saw that Galatasaray are in great shape and that, a few days after the victory in Moscow, were able to defeat the mighty Eczacibasi in the Turkish championship. Against Vakifbank will be even more difficult” said Terzic in an exclusive interview for WorldofVolley.
