Being a libero is not that easy job. You have to practice the defense each day and to make it a perfect part of your volleyball career in order to become the best libero in the world.
Santiago Danani is a libero who is actually on the right path when we speak about perfection. These two years in Italy made him a great libero.
You are going to do your third season in Italy. How do you feel there?
“I’m very happy to play another year in Italy. I always wanted to play at the top level, so I am playing my third season in Italy, one of the best Volleyball leagues in the world and it’s a dream come true for me. On the other hand, the Argentine and Italian cultures are so similar, so I feel very comfortable living here.”
Is there anything you miss from Argentina?
“I miss my family, friends and Asado (the Argentinian barbecue). But fortunately, I’m here with my girlfriend. With her, I feel a little closer to my home.”
It will be also your third season in Padova. What do you expect in the season 2020/2021?
“This year we have a completely new team. We are a younger team, but we have players with experience too. So, I think this year will be difficult because the season is long. We must be quiet after winning or losing a game. But if we can play aggressive all the season, I think we can do something big.”
How far can Padova go in the Serie A1?
“I don’t know. We must think just about the next match and always play in a very competitive way. This year maybe will be strange because of this pandemic. So, I think that the most important at this moment is to stay quiet trying to do the best.”
The fans won’t be in the stands obviously. Is it going to be difficult to play without them?
“We love to play with our fans, and I think they are our strength too. But at this moment the most important is to keep coronavirus under control and to keep the health of everyone so we can try to do the best. But I’m sure, they will watch all the matches on the tv or computer. So, we will play for them as well!”
What one libero should do to become a great libero?
“I don’t have the key for this, but in my opinion practicing and playing with passion all the time. But for me the most important thing is happiness. Without this, it is difficult to play very well. Work hard and play with passion are the two most important things.”
Do you still have some dreams that you didn’t reach in volleyball?
“Yes, I have many dreams to achieve, they are my source of energy, my engine. I want to be the best player I can be, win plenty of tournaments and leagues. But my biggest dream is to play the Olympic Games with Argentina and win a medal. That would be amazing,” says Santiago Danani for WorldofVolley.
