Paris 2024 BV: Brazil and Qatar Secure Final Quarterfinal Spots in Olympic Beach Volleyball

Monday evening’s Olympic beach volleyball action at the Eiffel Tower Stadium in Paris concluded the final eighth-finals for both the women’s and men’s tournaments. Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda), along with Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, clinched the last remaining spots in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Brazilian duo Ana Patricia and Duda dominated their match against Japan’s Akiko Hasegawa and Miki Ishii, winning decisively 2-0 (21-15, 21-16). Duda led with 20 points, while Ana Patricia contributed with three kill blocks and 10 kills. The Japanese team’s Akiko Hasegawa scored 18 points in a losing effort. The Brazilian pair will face Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s competition, Qatar’s Cherif and Ahmed, bronze medallists from Tokyo 2020, secured a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) victory over Chile’s Marco and Esteban Grimalt. Cherif stood out with seven blocks and a match-high 15 points. The Qataris will compete against Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh of the United States on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson defeated the USA’s Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) to advance to the quarterfinals. The Canadians will meet Spain’s Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno, who stunned the Dutch team of Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-13) victory.

In men’s action, the USA’s Partain and Benesh earned their spot in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) win over Italy’s Samuele Cottafava and Paolo Nicolai. Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira also advanced, setting up a quarterfinal match against Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, who won their match 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) against USA’s Miles Evans and Chase Budinger.

The quarterfinals will commence on Tuesday with a key match between Germany’s Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler and the Netherlands’ Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot.
