Unlike indoor volleyball and its younger sibling beach volleyball, a snow volleyball is not an Olympic sports discipline but tries to make its way there. And there was no better opportunity to show its potential than in the ongoing 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) asked several former and current indoor and beach volley stars to make a demonstration of a snow volleyball match in the Austria House on the Valentine’s Day.
Vladimir Grbić of Serbia (one-time World Championship and European Championship gold medalist each), Gilbero Filho „Giba“ of Brazil (one-time Olympic Games and three-time World Championship winner) and local female volleyball icon Kim Yeon-Koung were indoor volleyball representatives, while Emanuel Rego of Brazil (one-time Olympic and three-time World Championship trophy holder in beach volley) Chen Xue of China (one-time World Championship gold medalist in beach volley), Stefanie Schwaiger (one-time Eeuropean Championship gold medalist) and Nikolas Berger (one-time Eeuropean Championship titleholder) both Austrians, appeared on the white court in front of nearly one hundred fans as beach volley competitors.
They all put on clothes that befit more to the skiers and started the demonstration of the snow volleyball at a temperature below two degrees Celsius with each move being covered by the music sequence, DJ’s announcements and screams from the crowd…
