In a duel between the two teams that were not among favorites to win the 2019 Asian U23 Championship, Chinese Taipei overpowered India by a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23) in the gold medal match held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Chinese Taipei, consecutive two-time bronze medalists, lost only one match en route to the final – to Pakistan in Pool C of the preliminary round.
The silver medal is India’s best placement in the history of the tournament, that started in 2015 and is held every two years, as well. They were eighth in 2015. The title defenders Iran did not send a team to the tournament this year.
Chinese Taipei’s Chang Yu-Sheng scored a match-high 29 points. Amit Gulia top-scored for India with 20 points.
Japan had to settle with the bronze medal after outplaying Pakistan by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-18).
