BRA W: Even without infected Tandara, Osasco break Praia’s unbeaten run

Osasco São Cristóvão Saúde beat Dentil/Praia Clube in a derby and assumed leadership of the 2020/21 Brazilian Women’s Volleyball Championship.

In a balanced game, Osasco beat Praia in the tie-break on the road in a delayed game of the eighth round of the 2020/21 Brazilian Women’s Superliga Banco do Brasil regular season: 3-2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-21, 16-25, 17-15). The team from São Paulo ended a seven-game winning streak of the Minas Gerais side and inflicted a first defeat to the rivals in the competition. Until the encounter today, Praia was the only remained unbeaten team in Superliga.

Osasco prevailed even without their best player Tandara Caixeta, who tested positive for the coronavirus just a few hours prior to the game and remained in a hotel. Tainara Santos top-scored the winning side with 22 points. Mayany Souza was outstanding in blocking (8) and Camila Brait in reception (87 %; 73 % excellent). Fernanda Garay ‘Fê Garay’ tallied 18 points for Praia. Adding two points to their account, Osasco took the lead of the league with 24 points in nine matches. Praia reached 22 points from eight games played and are third-placed.

Itambé/Minas are leveled with Osasco in points after they downed fourth-placed Sesi Vôlei Bauru by a 3-1 in a delayed seventh round. The losing side entered the match following 18 days without training and adequate preparation due to the Covid-19 outbreak within the team.

American Megan Hodge highlighted Minas with 16 points. Caroline Gattaz ‘Carol Gattaz’ set up 4 blocks. Azerbaijani Polina Rahimova scored 22 points for Sesi Bauru.
