BRA M: Shake-Up in Brazil’s Volleyball Squad After Championship Loss

by WoV

As reported by the Brazilian media, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation has announced some changes to the men’s national team roster following a surprising defeat against Argentina in the South American Championship final. Assistant coach Carlos Schwanke and players Abouba, Matheus Brasília, Alê, and Victor Birigui, have been released as part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming Pre-Olympic tournament.

The departure of Abouba is particularly shocking as he was initially expected to be part of the pre-Pre-Olympic preparations but will instead rejoin Tours in France to continue preparation for the upcoming season. Brasília, Alê, and Birigui had limited chances with the main squad and recently participated in the Pan American Cup with Brazil’s B Team, making it unlikely for them to see action in the South American Championship unless there were injuries to the primary team.

Carlos Schwanke’s exit is also making headlines. Serving as assistant to head coach Renan Dal Zotto for four years, Schwanke played a crucial role in Brazil’s 2021 Volleyball Nations League victory. Although official accounts cite ‘personal reasons’ for his departure, rumors suggest dissatisfaction with player selection for the Pan American Cup as a possible reason. Journalist Bruno Voloch reported that inside sources suggest reasons other than personal for Schwanke’s departure.

While the exact details remain unclear, it is evident that the men’s volleyball team is undergoing a significant revamp to reorient and prepare for future challenges.
